Hawaii became the 50th US state on August 21, 1959. A series of islands on an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean make up the state. The archipelago is located in the southwest of the continental states, northeast of Australia, and southeast of Japan. Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii, and it's located on Oahu Island.

The state is made up of dozens of islands spread across 1,500 miles of a volcanic chain in the central Pacific Ocean. Eight "main islands" are located at the archipelago's southeastern end. They include Kauai, Oahu, Niihau, Moloka, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Hawaii, and Maui. Hawaii is the largest of the islands by far and is often referred to as the "Big Island" in order to avoid confusion with the entire state as a whole.

The word Hawaii, in the language of Polynesians, comes from the Proto-Polynesian "Sawaiki", meaning "homeland", as well as a mixture of words from other Polynesian languages, including Samoan "Savaii", Maori "Hawaiki", and Rarotongan "Avaiki". According to experts, the word "Hawaii" is a cognate of the name for "the ancestral home" in other Polynesian cultures. The name in Hawaii itself, however, has no meaning.

Hawaii, along with Alaska is a state outside the continental US and doesn't share a border with any other states. Hawaii is the most southern of the states and the second most western after Alaska. Hawaii's archipelago is located approximately 2,000 miles southwest of the mainland of North America.

It is the only state that grows coffee.
Hawaii is the only state surrounded completely by water (Alaska is a peninsula).
It's the only state with a royal palace.
Since Hawaii is a series of islands, it's the only state that has no "straight line" boundaries.

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in Hawaii, and it stands at approximately 13,796 feet. It's even taller than Mount Everest if its base from the ocean's seafloor is included in the measurements. With that measurement included, Mauna Kea stands at around 33,500 feet!

All of the islands in Hawaii were formed by seafloor volcano eruptions. Magna sources formed what some geologists call "hotspots". The last eruption of a Hawaiian volcano outside the Big Island is believed to have happened on Maui, at Haleakala, in the latter part of the 18th century. Some research, however, suggests that the most recent eruptions at Haleakala were centuries before that.

Hawaii is one of just four US states in which non-Hispanic Caucasians don't make up the majority of the population. Asian-Americans make up the majority of Hawaii's population, making it the number one state with Asian ethnicity. Approximately twenty percent of the state's population consists of people with mixed races--more so than any other state.
