- I highly recommend this place. I needed storage for a year and they had a great unit that was the right size and a great price, and I could lock in the price by pre-paying for the year I need. The building is brand new, so it’s very clean and in great condition. If I had any complaints, it would be these - the motion sensor lighting still needs tweaking. The lights in the unit and the hall kept going on and off while moving in. It was never completely dark, but some brighter, more consistent lighting would help! Second, there were a lot of folks there moving in and out when I arrived. I had hired movers for this, so I was paying a considerable hourly rate and couldn’t just wait for a spot in the loading dock to open up. So, we walked everything in from the parking area, which added a lot of time (and therefore hundreds of dollars at the hourly rate I was paying) to my move-in. There was space in the loading dock, but only if the existing vehicles moved into a more efficient positioning. Having “traffic management” in the loading dock may have helped here. Also, there’s only two elevators, and the other movers routinely held the doors open to fill the one they were using, so sometimes fifteen or twenty minutes would go by with neither elevator actually moving. For a new construction building, I am kind of surprised there was only one elevator bay and one loading dock. Having a second bay with two more elevators next to a second loading dock would have made things much more efficient. But, if I had just planned for the loading to take much longer, it would have been okay.

- Public Storage on Tyco Road, McLean, Virginia, is a very solidly run operation. The personnel are courteous and friendly; the spaces are well ventilated and secure. One problem we encountered was on a Sunday: the weekend is when a lot of people visit their storage spaces and this was no exception. However, there was only one person on duty and she was overwhelmed. There were enough carts to be used and we were told that if we wanted to use one of the carts kept at the front office we would have to leave our drivers license. The woman on duty had not even had time to have her lunch and wanted to leave to grab something to eat. This would have left us waiting for her to return in order to get our license back. When we first rented the space no one mentioned this restriction; we were told we might have to search for available carts but not that there would not be any carts available at all. It was an unpleasant and very inconvenient surprise. And for the weekend Public Storage should have had two people in the front office. We recommend going during normal business hours during the week if you can. There were more carts available then and sometimes there were three people in the office. They said that part of the problem is people stealing carts, which is really disgusting. I sympathize with Public Storage on that point, but they need a better solution than requiring people to leave a drivers license because the carts are either all being used or are scattered on various floors throughout the facility.
