Your Moving Day Checklist

Going through the process of moving can be both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. With tons of things to take care of, you can become easily stressed out, especially if you work through it in an unorganized manner. The key to simplifying the process is to come up with a moving day checklist. This way, you avoid the further stress of forgetting things and rushing to complete them at the last minute.

The first thing you must do when planning a move is to list down all the tasks you need to take care of. Always start ahead of time. Do the necessary preparations and have this moving day checklist handy.

Be Ready.

Start the day early. Even if you have already done the packing, it is important that you check the entire house before the movers come in. Make sure there are no dirty clothes around. Keep the place neat and tidy. The trash should be taken outside.

And since you must expect the moving day to be a very long one, make sure you get enough food to last you a day.

Secure Your Valuables.

Cash, jewelry, checkbook, important documents and other valuables must be secured. Never ship your jewelry if you do not want to run the risk of losing them. Keep and carry them with you instead.

Double Check Everything.

To make sure you have not forgotten anything, go through the drawers, the shelves and closets again. Pay the attic and the garage a visit to make sure you have everything packed and ready to go.

Mark Everything Right.

It is important that you have a marker with you just in case you need to make notes on the boxes for proper handling. If there are boxes you plan to take with you, note them clearly so the movers do not make the mistake of loading it in their truck.

Check the Inventory.

The list must be accurate, complete and detailed. Labels and entries marked as "miscellaneous" are unacceptable, especially when it refers to valuable items.

Oversee the Entire Process.

You must take note of the condition of your possessions before the movers load them. When the items are unloaded, check for their condition again. This is to make sure no damage has been done to your stuff in the process of moving.

Your dental, medical and financial records must be hand carried. Make sure you have enough cash to last you until you have settled into your new place. Your available funds must be able to cover the moving service charges and other expenses along the way.

Have Some Assistance.

There will be a lot of things going on at the same time. And though you may try, you may not be able to oversee everything. In which case, it is in your best interest to assign an assistant. This way, nothing is missed out on.

Do not forget to leave the keys to the owner or realtor. Include all important items and reminders on your moving day checklist. To make sure you have not forgotten anything, go through it over and over.
