According to the Census Bureau, though, West Virginia is considered to be part of the South since the majority of the state is south of the Mason-Dixon Line. The northern panhandle extends out adjacent to Ohio and Pennsylvania. Weirton and Wheeling are two West Virginia cities that are located right across the border from the Pittsburgh area, and Harper's Ferry, West Virginia is considered to be a part of the metropolitan Washington DC area.
It's because of this unique position that West Virginia is included in both the Northeastern United States and the Southeastern. It's also the only state which lies entirely within the Appalachian Regional Area.
West Virginia University, home of the "Mountaineers", and Marshall University, home to the "Thundering Herd", are the two largest colleges in the state. Both universities have a friendly rivalry. On November 14, 1970, the Marshall University Football team was killed in a plane crash. Around 75 people, including players, coaches, and the flight crew of Southern Airways Flight 932 were killed.
West Virginia is also noted for its natural, mountainous beauty, its coal mining and logging industries, trains, and labor history. It's also famous for a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, whitewater rafting, hiking, rock climbing, and ATV riding.
