If you have never been to South Dakota, then the impressive and majestic Mt. Rushmore located in the Black Hills should be one of the reasons that you visit. The strong presence of these faces has drawn an astounding amount of visitors who come from near and far to see it.

South Dakota is a Midwestern state that was named after both the Lakota and Dakota Sioux American Indian tribes. Not one of the well-populated states that you can think of, South Dakota still holds its own as being a state that boasts of having rich soil enough to produce crops in a variety.

More than that, history abounds in South Dakota and it is evident in some of the places that you may go while you are there. Most would be pleasantly surprised to know that dinosaurs once lived in the state that we now know as South Dakota. The complete bones of a dinosaur were found in this state and the bones are currently on display making it another one of the states' tourist attraction. And lovers of archaeology would also be in for a treat when they visit the southwestern part of the state at Badlands National Park where there are over thousands of bones from prehistoric creatures just waiting to be discovered.

South Dakota is also known for several national parks and they include the Wind Cave National Park, a park that has been in existence since 1903 and one that is home to a bison herd. An old nuclear missile among other interesting things can be seen at the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and the Jewel Cave National Monument which is located in Custer.

South Dakota is bordered by Minnesota and Iowa on the east, and by Montana and Wyoming on the west. On the south, the state is bordered by Nebraska and by North Dakota on the north.
