Follow these verified moving dos and don’ts to simplify your relocation process, reduce hidden costs, and avoid common logistical problems like item loss or delayed delivery. These guidelines use practical insights from certified moving associations and verified relocation specialists to help your move stay organized and on schedule.
Moving Dos and Don'ts

Self-storage facilities limit certain items to prevent damage, theft, pests, or legal problems. Common banned items include flammable chemicals, perishable food, live animals, and firearms. These rules are not only about safety. They also help facilities keep insurance coverage, follow state laws, and lower liability.

Many restrictions match those used by moving companies since both face similar transport and safety concerns. Understanding these rules can help you avoid accidental violations and protect your belongings and nearby units.
What You Are Not Allowed to Store

Hiring a moving company for an out-of-state move is not a cheap process. There are many interstate movers, but it is always good to know that you are contracting with a company that has performed well for someone else before.
Interstate Moves

Moving can feel overwhelming, especially when trying to balance costs and reliability. Choosing the cheapest movers may be tempting, but it could lead to surprise costs like damages or delays. Reliable, affordable movers exist and usually offer clear pricing, good communication, and solid references. Always look for movers with good reviews, insurance, and certifications.
Cheap Movers

Unpacking boxes and placing furniture is only one part of the move-in process. A new home also needs small adjustments to feel comfortable and work well. Handling these steps early helps your space feel settled rather than temporary. The sections below explain what to do after unpacking so your home feels like yours.

The price I booked online and what I ended up paying was inconsistent. I was compelled to add cost of insurance which I did not need. The manager of the facility refused to remove the cost. The facility was really well suited for the designed purpose, very clean and neatly maintained. Excellent access controls and very polite, friendly and helpful staff. There were no toilet facilities and we were denied access to the toilet facilities when asked to use them.

Finding and renting trusted self-storage facilities in Monterey, California is now easier through MoversCorp. Compare options and rent storage near you with just a few clicks. Consider us as your solution for finding and reserving a storage facility throughout California, including options for mini storage units and storage containers to suit a variety of needs.

The cheapest storage unit in your area may not always be the best choice. Please consider the following factors when selecting a storage unit in Monterey, California.

  • Monthly rates are based on features such as 24/7 access, climate control, facility security, location, and overall demand in your area.

  • For household goods, the most common storage unit sizes are 5x5, 5x10, 10x10, and 10X15. For added flexibility, some companies also offer portable mini storage units for rent for temporary residential use that can be delivered to your property or hauled by you for on-site storage.

  • Many facilities offer larger unit sizes for commercial and business storage, like 10x20 or 10x30. These sizes are ideal for storing office equipment, inventory, or business records. These sizes can also accommodate vehicles, making them a great option for car storage.

  • Most storage facilities require insurance for stored items. If you don’t have your own policy, you may need to buy one through the facility, adding about $15 to $50 to your storage rental cost each month. Some places also charge a refundable deposit or an administrative fee when you move in. Always ask about these costs and refund conditions before signing a lease.

  • Storage facilities with flexible leases allow you to rent on a month-to-month basis. Be aware that storage unit price increases are common. Many customers say their rates go up after a few months, sometimes more than once a year. Since storage rentals are month-to-month, facilities can raise prices with proper notice. Ask about potential rate increases before committing to a unit.

  • The monthly rent will also depend on whether a facility offers climate-controlled units or only drive-up units. Climate-controlled units cost more than drive-up units or storage containers.

  • Most locations have digital keypad access, which provides you with your personal access code. Check with the office for availability.
  • Consider drive-up access for easier loading and unloading, especially for heavy or bulky items.

  • Some facilities may provide extra room or rental space for public use, such as areas for organizing or handling your stored items. Contact the property manager to confirm availability.

  • Check for online reviews and recommendations. Local experts can guide renters to facilities that stay available and maintain reliable service during peak demand.

  • Ask the office about the preventive security measures for safeguarding the location. Facilities with experienced staff often maintain stronger daily oversight by monitoring access logs and responding quickly to tenant concerns.

Are there free storage deals in Monterey, California?

Many companies offer promotions for new customers, such as a free first month. Search by your zip code or distance to locate cheap storage units that come with the first month free and other decent storage discounts. Take advantage of specials if you're a first-time renter.

How do I find the cheapest storage in Monterey?

You can sort by price, from low to high, to find affordable options on our website. Away from the city center, you have a better chance of finding inexpensive storage rental solutions. The facility's size and amenities affect the monthly price.

What is the difference between an indoor and outdoor unit?

You have easy access to your unit when it is an outdoor unit. If the unit is indoors, you must first enter the building to get to it.

What is the difference between office hours and gate hours?

The property's operating hours are during office hours. The store manager will be on duty to help you with your questions. If you have questions or need help outside these hours, look up the property's phone number to contact the leasing office directly. The gate hours determine when you can enter the property and use your unit.
