Mississippi is a state that is situated in the Deep South of the United States. The state capitol is Jackson and it is also the largest city in Mississippi. The state acquired its name through the famous Mississippi River. Magnolia is the state symbol.

There are certain areas in Mississippi that are under the management of the National Park Service. Some of them are: Natchez State Parkway, Vicksburg National Military Park, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Tupelo National Battlefield, and Cemetery and Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site.

Mississippi is also home to a number of well known rivers and lakes in the state. The Pascagoula River, Yazoo River, Pearl River, Big Black River and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway are examples of some of the rivers found in the state. Lakes include Sardis Lake, Grenada Lake and Arkabutla Lake.

Over half the states' area is covered with wild trees and therefore makes Mississippi a widely forested area. Some of the wild trees that can be seen in these parts are pine, elm, cottonwood, oak, hickory, sweetgum, pecan and tupelo. Mississippi is also a state where lumber is quite dominant.

Mississippi is said to contain the highest number of African Americans living in any state. This number has now begun to increase as a result of the increasing number of births. The largest ancestries in the state of Mississippi are: German, American, English, French, Irish, Italian, Scots-Irish and Scottish. Mississippi also has a number immigrant from Mexico, Southern and Central America.

Due to the Spanish and French rule in 1600s, many of the citizens of Mississippi are Roman Catholics. The state also attracted Protestant evangelicals such as Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians. Other religions have also subsisted in Mississippi including Islam and Jewish.

Mississippi is widely known for its literature and music; however it also has embraced other forms of art as well. The strong religious views in the state have inspired certain art by outside artists and these works of art have been displayed nationally.

The states capitol, Jackson, established the USA International Ballet Competition which takes place every four years. This competition gathers some of the most talented young ballet dancers from around the world.

The first and oldest film festival in the state is the Magnolia Independent Film Festival and it is held every year in Starkville.
