It's an American car race, and it's held every year during the Memorial Day Weekend in Speedway, Indiana. Many open-wheel race cars compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Speedway every year to watch the race.

Indiana residents are referred to as "Hoosiers". The term's origin is unknown, although there are many myths and stories. The name of the state means "Indian Land" or "Land of the Indians". The name originates from at least 1768, when Congress referred to the area as the Indiana Land Company. Near Evansville, in the Southwestern part of the state, one of the country's best preserved prehistoric Native American monuments is located. It's known as the Angel Mounds State Historic Site.

Lake Michigan and Michigan border Indiana from the North, and Ohio borders Indiana from the east. Kentucky borders Indiana from the south, and the two share a border with the Ohio River. Indiana is bounded on the west by the state of Illinois. Indiana is also known as one of the "Great Lakes" states.

There are twenty four state parks in Indiana, as well as nine reservoirs that are man made. Hundreds of lakes are also found in the state. It has been believed by some that Native American tribes had a presence in Indiana as early as 10,000 years ago. Radiocarbon dating, however, estimates that a tool artifact discovered by archaeologists from the University of Indianapolis actually dates back to 8,400 BC! This find supports the notion that humans migrated into that area even earlier than what was previously believed.

The tribes apparently fought over domination of the area for thousands of years. Finally, around 900 AD, an advanced Mississippian culture became dominant in that area, and they built very large cities for thousands of inhabitants. Strangely, the entire civilization disappeared for unknown reasons sometime in the fifteenth century. It wasn't until the 1670's that the history of that area began to be recorded, after the first Europeans came to claim it for France.

In modern times, Indiana has a population of over six million people. Each year, the state receives a natural increase in population growth.
